Onlays

Rebuilt to look, feel, and last like the original.

What it is

Rebuilt, not patched.

When a tooth has lost too much structure for a filling to hold — from a deep crack, a large old restoration, or a root canal — we rebuild it from the outside in. The choice between an inlay, an onlay, and a full crown comes down to how much of the natural tooth is left, and how much of it we can keep.

Coverage
Fits inside the cusps — replaces the center of the tooth.
Wraps over one or more cusps, leaving healthy walls intact.
Covers the entire visible tooth, fully encasing what remains.
When it's right
A cavity too large for a filling, but the cusps are still strong.
A cracked or worn cusp, with the rest of the tooth still sound.
A heavily restored, fractured, or root-canaled tooth that needs full protection.
Tooth removed
The least — only the damaged inner portion.
More than an inlay, less than a crown — only the compromised cusps.
The most — the tooth is reduced on all sides for full coverage.
Material
Porcelain or pressed ceramic, shade-matched to the tooth — or gold, for a more traditional restoration.
